Batik Talent Hunting @Aboriginal Village
Creating Income-opportunities for aboriginal people

Venue:     Pulau Carey, Kampung Sungai Rambai
Participant:      Aborigines
Time:     10am – 1pm
Date:     18 & 25 May 2008 ( Sunday )
        1 & 8 June 2008 ( Sunday )

Written by project manager, Ms.Billie Day  A group comprising of 7 individuals arrived at Pulau Carey around 2.30pm. However, somewhere along our journey towards Kg Rambai, we had received an sms from a woman at Kg Bumbun, who asked us to drop by to pick up a few children for the lesson. Since we had to go pass this village first before reaching our key destination, we managed to bundle up four children into our cars.  Upon reaching the village, we quickly unloaded the necessary materials for the day's lesson, meahwhile the children from the villages slowly made their way into the hall; and we did to our surprise, see an elderly lady or two walking in as well. Both these women seemed to have been quite keen to know what batik was all about . Some community children came on their own mode of transportation (two wheelers - motocycles and bicycles) from as far away as Kg Sg Bumbun; whilst those who lived near the community hall just took a short stroll in. The participants numbered around 20 young children from ages between 9 to 18; making most of them school going children. However, most of the participants were girls and there were only four boys. Interestingly enough the boys were from the further village of Kg Bumbun. Our main sponsor for the programme is Ms Emilia Tan. She gave a short introduction on batik painting. Basically she gave a talk on colour application, colours and required materials. After selecting some pictures for artistic interpretation (subject matter), student groups were formed. Each headed by a batik instructor who would precede to heat up the wax for "canting".There were an average of four students to a table.

The majority of these children were shy, but were often smiling away and anxiously awaiting for the "ink and brush" to make way to their table. They were by far the most silent bunch of students a teacher could have ever hoped for and it was rather unfortunate that we had fallen short of student art materials like brushes and water containers. There were a few students who exhibited great discipline even though they were pretty excited about the whole thing. As we went along experimenting with coloring techniques of batik, most of the students could not be judged for their skills just yet. Based upon the results, it would be safe to assume that batik painting has indeed presented itself as a new challenging skill for the youth of this community. Particularly to most of the participants who were just beginning.

There was however one who had some exposure to batik painting a year ago.Towards the end of the lesson, participants were taught to present their art piece in an "art card frame" with a plastic "window" to take home. A message was given to them, to spread the word about what was done that day. We wanted them to share with their parents the lesson that was taught that day; to tell friends about it and maybe persuade others to attend  the next lesson.

It was the saddest thing that we did not receive any adult participation for the initial lesson. As adults or more matured individuals are better suited for some of the advanced techniques or instruction that we plan to introduce later on. We could not have asked for a more motivated group of youngsters but as much as they were keen, the programme's success with the community could have been accelerated with more matured/adult students.

My Birthday

emilia | 06 June, 2008 22:39

There is not much celebration for my birthday this year, due to my very busy working schedule.

But this time I only had a birthday dinner that evening, with my siblings at Renaissance Hotel, at the Dynasty Chinese Restaurant.

I Remember last year, 2007. I had a BBQ party at home, invited all my friends to join, and I truly enjoyed myself.

Since the start of MYBATIK Magazine, almost "120% " of my time has been spent on this baby. So many friends in my life, I really have no time to contact them, and also most of them have lost contact too.

Suddenly I found my life starting to be very lonely and busy. I don't even have time to do my own things. Look at my garden, and all the plants, my fishes, and my dog Sasha, pity them..

I cannot remember when was the last time I washed my aquarium, and bathed my dog. When was the last movie I watched?

Everyday for me, dining is just with my business partner or business associates. At home, only in front of the monitor. When in my room every night, I watch my favorite channel the Animal Planet and wait for sleep to come.

No matter how busy it is, I knew that, it is worth it, for MYBATIK. I love my job and I love my life. The most important thing is, I love this BUSY LIFE.

Lastly thank you to those Birthday greetings via sms from

1.June Ngo ( myBatik Contributor)
2.Cecilia Tan ( my sister - future Lawyer )
3.T.C. Lee ( myBatik Business Director )
4.Jess Chua ( my ex- assistant )
5.Shah Shamshiri ( myBatik contributing Editor)

9.Suzanne Lim ( ex- secondary school mate )
10.Olivia Chong ( my neighbor )
11. Benny Tan ( Renaissance Hotel, Dynasty Chinese restaurant Manager )
12. Anthony Chew ( Business Associate friend )

And many more...

For the best sms among all, the winner is, MIKE TUNG, his sms is as below,

Love & Joy in your heart,
Health & Strength in your body,

Happy Birthday and many Happy Returns

Let me make a wish now.... 1. ...2.. 3...

Petrol Price

emilia | 05 June, 2008 22:32

This morning, it was my first time filling up petrol > since the price increased two days ago on the 5th June.

I was really shocked when I looked at the price, RM3.15 per litre for V-POWER at SHELL. In the past it was just RM2.15. I pumped a full tank for my LITTLE WHITE ( I called my car little white cos it is white in color ) x-trail 2.5, it cost me RM170+ +.

In the past, I only paid for RM110, but today, it increased by almost 40%.

What will happen in this world? The price of everything keeps on increasing and yet the sales in the company is just so so?

No more extra income, how can people spend on Batik clothing? myBatik Advertising and promotion?

And what will happen to the batik classes? So many question marks appeared in my mind.

Who am I?

emilia

In this era, we see many creative and intelligent minds striving to do their best in promoting Malaysia to the world at large. As for me, it is important that people see Malaysia as a successful country in every area possible. I strive to encourage and educate both Malaysians and non-Malaysians to discover the art of Batik, which is part of the Malaysian culture. I created TMS Art as a stepping-stone to gradually uphold my aim. TMS is actually an abbreviation of my name, Tan Mei Shia that was given by my most loving parents. Working in TMS ART, is one of the most exciting moments of my life. We as a team in TMS Art, work together and grow together each day. The quick results of our achievements and efforts were truly amazing. This was shared with everyone especially the media, public etc. Our motto is ?Live and learn Art everyday?. This encourages us to learn from our mistakes and to move on to achieve our daily goals.

My name is Tan Mei Shia (T.M.S) , with my surname being Tan. However everyone loves to call me Emilia.

I was born in Selangor, Malaysia and my obsession with art emerged after the age of six. I was doing very well in watercolour painting for more than 10 years during my primary school and high school years before I decided to enter the world of Batik.

In 1999, after high school, I decided to travel around Asia in a journey of exploration to find my way in life. I spent two years finding my way, studying about other countries' cultures and humanism. I became very interested in Australian Aboriginal art from the first time I arrived in Australia. After that I was determined to study more about Aboriginal art when I was staying in Melbourne, Australia.

My Journey as an Artist is evolving slowly.

"Emilia, is one of the few non-Malays who attempts to explore the richness of Malaysian batik. Her effort in elevating the art of batik in Malaysia as well as overseas is indeed noble and should be lauded..." by Utusan Malay Newspaper, January 2007.

"it's rather amazing to find an artist who is serious in using batik as the main theme, and further if that artist is not a Malay.." by Beriata Harian Newspaper, December 2006.

"Emilia Tan's works is conceptualized with life and action, rich and vivid colours to express intuitively and spontaneously with realism and abstraction." By KL Life Style Magazine, December 2006

?Emilia Tan is a talented Chinese Artist, who not only used batik as a medium of
artistic expression, but is keen to bring batik to the world stage...? By Malaysia
Tatler Magazine, December 2006.

?Malaysian batik is given a modern twist by internationally acclaimed artist Emilia Tan in her Malaysian Batik meets Australian Aboriginal Art series?.? By Going Places Malaysia Airlines Magazine, December 2006.

?Emilia Tan is one of the few non-Malays who not only have passion in batik painting but use it as a medium for artistic expression?? by The Star Weekend Newspaper, December 2006

? Emilia Tan had an eye for everything beautiful. She proves the point with her dedication to the arts. Besides spreading the beauty of batik (via workshops and classes) to fellow Malaysians, she keeps on innovating and experimenting with new techniques in batik-making. She combines mosaic (breaking and realigning of wax pieces) as well as Aboriginal arts with batik. In addition, she also challenges the seemingly impossible: batik on paper......? VISION KL Magazine, December 2006

"Creativity stems from one's innate ability to envision a whole new concept, and in putting her thoughts to work, Emilia Tan has show that creativity is a wonderful gift to be born with.? by The Star Newspaper, July 2006

"To find a Chinese lady taking interest in batik painting may be hard, but finding a talented one who is naturally interested in using batik as a medium of fine artistic expressions besides being keen on bringing it to the world stages is nearly impossible. One such lady, though, is Emilia Tan "by Soka Gakkai Malaysia's COSMIC Magazine, June 2006

"Substitute Art for beauty and you understand Emilia Tan's approach to art. She is truly talented a Renaissance artist and also the exceptional one who is able to work in many mediums, including fabric. Her art is showcased, not only on someone?s wall, but on walking people all around us. The flow of her unique designs and the startling hues of her invented colours are available for all of us to delight in. She is a painter, a fashion designer, a clothes label for the elite, a friend of the PM's former much beloved wife, Endon, and most importantly she is unique. She is Emilia Tan" by The Expat Magazine, March 2006

"In a complex process of trail and error, Emilia Tan layers colour upon colour, matrial upon material, using wax and dyes to create luminous images of great depth and mystery. The drips and pools of color in Tan's dream-like imagery are the mark of an unpredictable medium; yet she maintains a superb balamce of design, fluidity of movement and expressiveness of form. With spontaneity of emotion, the shapes in Tan's work are in continual motion, sweeping upward in vigorous ascent, or falling brightly in delicate descent." by Agora Gallery New York Lyrical Abstraction Exhibition Press Release, February 2006
